ROLE OF DEPARTMENT

There are five main roles of the Department.

  • Monitor the development and performance of local government.
  • Support local government by backing up where its capacity proves insufficient.
  • Promote capacity development in a more systematic manner, to ensure that local is increasingly able to manage its own affairs.
  • Regulate how municipalities exercise their authority.
  • Intervene where local government consistently fails to adequately perform its designated function.
